By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create your own Moon Phase wheel and understand the different phases of the moon.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Brass fastener

Before starting the lesson, it would be helpful to have a basic understanding of the concept of the moon and its different phases.

Activities

  1. Draw a large circle on the construction paper using a pencil.
  2. Divide the circle into eight equal sections, like slices of a pie.
  3. Write the names of the moon phases in each section: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, Waning Crescent.
  4. Color each section to represent the corresponding moon phase.
  5. Cut out the circle along the outer edge.
  6. Punch a hole in the center of the circle.
  7. Insert a brass fastener through the hole and secure it at the back.
  8. Now you have your own Moon Phase wheel! You can turn the wheel to see the different phases of the moon.
