Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have improved their swimming skills and gained confidence in the water.

Materials and Prep

  • Swimsuit
  • Towel
  • Swimming pool or access to a safe body of water
  • Waterproof sunscreen
  • Water bottle

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student is comfortable in the water and understands basic water safety rules.

Activities

  1. Warm-up exercises: Begin with a few stretches and light exercises to prepare the body for swimming. This can include arm circles, leg swings, and torso twists.

  2. Kicking practice: Have the student hold onto the pool edge or use a kickboard for support. Encourage them to kick their legs while keeping their body straight and their face in the water.

  3. Arm stroke practice: Teach the student the proper technique for the arm stroke. Start with simple movements, such as practicing the freestyle stroke with one arm at a time, and gradually progress to using both arms simultaneously.

  4. Breathing exercises: Help the student practice breathing while swimming. Teach them to turn their head to the side and take a breath during the arm stroke, then exhale underwater.

  5. Water safety drills: Practice important water safety skills, such as treading water, floating on the back, and using different swimming strokes to reach a designated point in the pool.

  6. Fun water games: End the lesson with some enjoyable water games, such as diving for objects, playing tag in the water, or having a friendly swimming race.
