Materials and Prep

  • A computer or gaming console with Fallout 4 installed
  • Notebook or paper for taking notes

Prior knowledge of the game mechanics and basic understanding of World War II and the Cold War will be helpful.

Activities

  • Play Fallout 4: Encourage the student to spend some time exploring the in-game world, paying attention to the various locations, characters, and historical references they encounter.
  • Research Historical Events: Ask the student to choose one major historical event, such as World War II or the Cold War, and research its causes, key figures, and impact on society.
  • Compare and Contrast: Have the student identify similarities and differences between the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout 4 and the historical event they researched. They can create a Venn diagram or write a short essay highlighting these points.
  • Create a Timeline: In their notebook, ask the student to create a timeline that incorporates both the historical event and the timeline of events within Fallout 4. They can mark significant dates and events on the timeline.
