Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 2 year old student will be able to identify and name different colors.

Materials and Prep

  • A set of colored objects (can be toys, blocks, or any other safe objects)
  • A large piece of white paper or a whiteboard
  • A marker or crayon

Activities

  • Color Sorting: Show the student different colored objects and ask them to sort them by color. Encourage them to name the colors as they sort.
  • Color Hunt: Hide different colored objects around the room and ask the student to find them. Once they find an object, have them name the color.
  • Color Mixing: Use the marker or crayon to draw two different colors on the white paper or whiteboard. Ask the student to identify the colors and then mix them together by drawing lines or circles where the colors overlap. Discuss the new color that is created.
  • Color Scavenger Hunt: Give the student a color to focus on and ask them to find objects in the room that match that color. Encourage them to name the objects and the color as they find them.

Talking Points

  • "Colors are all around us! Let's learn about different colors today."
  • "Look at this object, it's red! Can you say 'red'?"
  • "Now we have a blue object. Can you say 'blue'?"
  • "When we mix red and blue together, we get a new color called purple. Can you say 'purple'?"
  • "Let's find objects that are the same color as this crayon. Can you say the color of the objects you find?"
