Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and create contractions.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil and paper
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard (optional)

Activities

  1. Matching Game: Create a set of cards with contractions on one side and their corresponding full words on the other side. Shuffle the cards and place them face down. The student can take turns flipping two cards at a time, trying to find matching contractions and full words.

  2. Contractions Hunt: Give the student a list of sentences or short paragraphs with contractions missing. The student's task is to read the sentence and fill in the missing contraction. For example, "I am going to the park" becomes "I'm going to the park".

  3. Contraction Creation: Provide the student with a list of full words and ask them to create contractions by combining the words. For example, "do not" becomes "don't". Encourage the student to come up with as many contractions as they can.

Talking Points

  • "Today we are going to learn about contractions. Do you know what a contraction is? It's when we combine two words and replace some letters with an apostrophe."
  • "Contractions help us to speak and write more quickly and efficiently. Instead of saying 'do not,' we can say 'don't.'"
  • "Let's look at some examples of contractions. Can you tell me what 'can't' stands for? That's right, it stands for 'cannot'."
  • "Now, let's try creating some contractions ourselves. I will give you a word and you need to think of a contraction that can replace it. For example, if I say 'will not,' what contraction can you make? Yes, 'won't'!"
  • "Great job! Contractions are a fun way to make our language more interesting. Keep practicing and soon you'll be a contraction expert!"
