Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of photography and apply them to take creative and interesting photos.

Materials and Prep

  • A digital camera or smartphone with a camera
  • An empty memory card or enough storage space on your device
  • A fully charged battery or access to a power source
  • A computer or device to review and edit your photos (optional)

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Exploring Your Camera
  • Take some time to familiarize yourself with the different buttons, settings, and modes on your camera or smartphone. Experiment with changing settings and capturing a few test shots to see how they affect the image.

  • Activity 2: Composition Practice
  • Find interesting subjects or objects around your home or in nature. Practice composing your photos by experimenting with different angles, perspectives, and framing techniques. Take multiple shots of the same subject to see how small adjustments can make a big difference.

  • Activity 3: Light and Shadows
  • Experiment with capturing photos in different lighting conditions. Take photos in bright sunlight, during golden hour (the hour before sunset), and in low light or indoor settings. Observe how light and shadows can dramatically change the mood and atmosphere of your photos.

  • Activity 4: Editing and Enhancing
  • If you have access to photo editing software or apps, try enhancing your photos by adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, and other settings. Explore different filters and effects to add a creative touch to your images.
