Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 2-year-old student will have a basic understanding of Shrove Tuesday and its significance.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons/markers
  • A pancake or a picture of a pancake
  • A small toy or object

Activities

  • Coloring: Provide the child with paper and crayons/markers and encourage them to draw a picture of a pancake.

  • Pancake Toss: Place a pancake on the floor and have the child throw a small toy or object onto the pancake, trying to land it on top. Talk about how pancakes are traditionally eaten on Shrove Tuesday.

  • Pancake Pretend Play: Use pretend play kitchen items or toys to act out making and flipping pancakes. Encourage the child to pretend to cook and eat pancakes.

Talking Points

  • "Shrove Tuesday is a special day when people eat pancakes. Yum!"

  • "Pancakes are flat and round, just like the sun or a circle. Can you draw a circle pancake?"

  • "Sometimes people toss pancakes in the air and try to catch them. Let's try tossing this toy and see if we can land it on the pancake."

  • "Pretend play time! Let's use our imagination and pretend we are making pancakes in the kitchen. What ingredients do we need?"

  • "Pancakes are yummy to eat, and they help people get ready for a special time called Lent. Lent is when people give up something they enjoy for a little while."
