Objective

By the end of this lesson, the 4-year-old student will have a basic understanding of Leap Day and its significance.

Materials and Prep

  • No materials required
  • No prior knowledge needed

Activities

  • Create a Leap Day Calendar:

Using a sheet of paper, help your child draw a simple calendar for the month of February. Label the 29th as "Leap Day" and decorate the page with fun Leap Day-themed stickers or drawings.

  • Leap Day Hopscotch:

Draw a hopscotch grid on the floor using chalk or tape. Instead of numbering the squares 1 to 10, label them with Leap Day-related words or symbols (e.g., frogs, clocks, 29). Take turns hopping on the squares and saying the word or symbol out loud.

  • Leap Day Story Time:

Read a children's book about Leap Day, such as "Leap Back Home to Me" by Lauren Thompson. Discuss the concept of Leap Day and ask your child questions about the story to encourage comprehension.

Talking Points

  • What is Leap Day?

"Leap Day is a special day that happens once every four years. It's added to our calendar to keep it in sync with the Earth's orbit around the sun."

  • Why do we have Leap Day?

"We have Leap Day because it takes the Earth about 365.25 days to go around the sun. By adding an extra day every four years, we make up for that extra quarter day and keep our calendar accurate."

  • What happens on Leap Day?

"On Leap Day, some people like to do something special or out of the ordinary because it's a rare day. Some people even celebrate their birthdays on Leap Day!"

  • What symbols are associated with Leap Day?

"Frogs and clocks are often used as symbols for Leap Day. Frogs because they can leap, just like the day, and clocks because time is an important part of our calendar."
