Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a Valentine's Day "Love You to Pieces" mosaic art using only paper and glue.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper in various colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Pencil
  • Printed heart template (optional)

Prior to the lesson, cut the construction paper into small squares or rectangles to be used as mosaic pieces. You can also print and cut out a heart template if needed.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of mosaic art to the student, explaining that it involves creating a picture using small pieces of colored paper.
  2. Show the student examples of mosaic art, such as pictures of ancient Roman mosaics or modern mosaic artworks.
  3. Guide the student in choosing a color scheme for their "Love You to Pieces" mosaic. Discuss the different emotions and meanings associated with different colors.
  4. Have the student draw or trace a heart shape onto a piece of construction paper using a pencil. Alternatively, they can use a printed heart template.
  5. Show the student how to apply glue to a small section of the heart shape.
  6. Encourage the student to carefully place the paper mosaic pieces onto the glued section, creating a colorful pattern.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the entire heart shape is covered with the paper mosaic pieces.
  8. Allow the artwork to dry completely.
  9. Optional: Help the student write a message or their name on the artwork to make it more personalized.

Talking Points

  • "Mosaic art is like making a puzzle with tiny pieces of paper."
  • "We can use different colors to show different feelings. What color makes you feel happy? What color makes you feel calm?"
  • "Let's choose some colors that remind us of love and friendship."
  • "We can use a heart shape because hearts are a symbol of love."
  • "When we use glue, we need to be careful and apply it only to small sections at a time."
  • "We can create patterns by placing the paper pieces in different ways. How about making a rainbow pattern?"
  • "We need to cover the whole heart with the mosaic pieces to make it look complete."
  • "After we finish, we need to let our artwork dry so that it stays together."
  • "If you want, you can add your name or a special message to your artwork to make it even more special."
