Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and understand the five kingdoms of living things.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils
  • Internet access or books about the five kingdoms of living things

Activities

  • Activity 1: Kingdom Sorting - Create flashcards or small pieces of paper with the names of the five kingdoms (Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, and Monera). Shuffle the cards and ask the student to sort them into the correct categories.
  • Activity 2: Research and Draw - Have the student choose one kingdom and research about its characteristics and examples of organisms within that kingdom. Then, ask them to draw and label some of those organisms.
  • Activity 3: Kingdom Scavenger Hunt - Give the student a list of characteristics or examples from each kingdom. Have them explore their surroundings (indoors or outdoors) to find objects or living things that fit each category.

Talking Points

  • Animalia Kingdom: Animals belong to this kingdom. They can move, eat food, and breathe air. For example, dogs, cats, and birds are all part of the Animalia kingdom.
  • Plantae Kingdom: Plants belong to this kingdom. They make their own food through photosynthesis and have roots, stems, and leaves. Examples include trees, flowers, and grass.
  • Fungi Kingdom: Fungi are organisms like mushrooms and molds. They cannot make their own food and instead absorb nutrients from other living or dead organisms.
  • Protista Kingdom: This kingdom includes single-celled organisms like amoebas and algae. They can be found in water and have different shapes and sizes.
  • Monera Kingdom: Bacteria belong to this kingdom. They are tiny, single-celled organisms that can be found almost everywhere, including inside our bodies.
