Objective
The objective of this lesson is for the student to gain a basic understanding of mountain biking skills and techniques, as well as improve their overall fitness level.
Materials and Prep
- A mountain bike
- A properly fitted helmet
- Comfortable athletic clothing and closed-toe shoes
- A safe outdoor area for biking (such as a park or trail)
- Water bottle for hydration
- Prior knowledge of basic bike handling and balance
Activities
- Activity 1: Bike Handling Skills - Set up a small obstacle course using cones or markers in an open area. Practice skills such as weaving through the cones, tight turns, and controlled braking.
- Activity 2: Hill Climbing - Find a moderate incline or hill and practice climbing it with proper technique. Emphasize maintaining a steady pace, shifting gears efficiently, and using proper body positioning.
- Activity 3: Descending Techniques - Practice descending skills by finding a gentle slope or hill. Focus on weight distribution, using brakes effectively, and maintaining control while descending.
- Activity 4: Endurance Ride - Plan a longer ride on a trail or designated biking route. This activity will help improve cardiovascular fitness and provide an opportunity to apply the skills learned during the lesson.
Talking Points
- Proper Bike Fit - "It's important to have a bike that fits you well. Adjust the seat height so that your leg is almost fully extended when the pedal is at the lowest point."
- Bike Handling - "When maneuvering through obstacles, remember to keep your body relaxed, look ahead, and use your body weight to shift your bike."
- Gearing - "Understanding how to use your gears efficiently will make climbing hills easier. Shift to a lower gear before the climb and maintain a steady cadence."
- Braking Technique - "When braking, apply pressure evenly to both brakes, keeping your weight centered over the bike. Avoid locking up the wheels."
- Safety Precautions - "Always wear a helmet to protect your head. Check your bike before each ride for any loose parts or tire pressure issues. Be aware of your surroundings and follow all traffic rules."
