Objective

The objective of this lesson is to introduce the concept of Valentine's Day in a fun and engaging way, while also exposing the student to basic foreign language vocabulary related to the holiday.

Materials and Prep

  • Valentine's Day-themed pictures or flashcards
  • A small stuffed animal or toy heart
  • A Valentine's Day-themed book or story

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Show the student pictures or flashcards of Valentine's Day-related items, such as hearts, flowers, and candies. Say the name of each item in the foreign language and encourage the student to repeat after you.
  • Play a game of "Find the Heart" using the small stuffed animal or toy heart. Hide it in different places around the room and have the student search for it while saying the word for "heart" in the foreign language.
  • Read a Valentine's Day-themed book or story in the foreign language. Point out and repeat key words or phrases related to the holiday.

Talking Points

  • Say "Happy Valentine's Day" in the foreign language: "Feliz Día de San Valentín" (Spanish), "Joyeuse Saint-Valentin" (French), "Alles Gute zum Valentinstag" (German).
  • Teach the student to say "I love you" in the foreign language: "Te quiero" (Spanish), "Je t'aime" (French), "Ich liebe dich" (German).
  • Point to a heart picture or flashcard and say the word for "heart" in the foreign language: "corazón" (Spanish), "coeur" (French), "Herz" (German).
  • Encourage the student to say "thank you" in the foreign language: "gracias" (Spanish), "merci" (French), "danke" (German).
  • Introduce the word for "friend" in the foreign language: "amigo/amiga" (Spanish), "ami/amie" (French), "Freund/Freundin" (German).
