Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and correctly use prepositions in sentences.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil or pen
- Highlighters or colored pencils
- No additional preparation required
Activities
-
Preposition Hunt: Ask the student to find 10 objects in the room and write a sentence for each object using a preposition. For example, "The book is on the table."
-
Preposition Charades: Write down various prepositions on separate pieces of paper and place them in a container. Have the student pick a preposition and act it out without speaking while others guess the preposition being acted out.
-
Preposition Collage: Provide magazines or newspapers and ask the student to cut out pictures that show prepositions. Have them create a collage with the pictures and label each one with the corresponding preposition.
Talking Points
- "A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence."
- "Prepositions often indicate location, direction, time, or manner."
- "Some common prepositions include 'in', 'on', 'under', 'beside', 'between', 'above', 'below', 'through', 'with', and 'to'."
- "Prepositions can be used to describe where something is, the direction of movement, the time of an event, or the way something is done."
- "It's important to remember that prepositions are always followed by a noun or pronoun."
- "Let's practice identifying prepositions in sentences. Can you find the preposition in the sentence 'The cat is sitting on the mat'?"
- "Now, let's try using prepositions in our own sentences. Can you create a sentence using the preposition 'under'?"
