Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills in a fun and engaging way through Pokemon-related activities.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Pokemon cards or images (optional)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Create a Pokemon Team
Choose six Pokemon cards or images and assign each Pokemon a number based on their Pokedex number. Add up the total sum of the numbers and write it down.
-
Pokemon Battle
Imagine a battle between two trainers. Choose two Pokemon from your team and determine their attack and defense points. Add the attack points of one Pokemon to the defense points of the other Pokemon. Write down the result.
-
Calculate Experience Points
For each Pokemon in your team, calculate their experience points by multiplying their level by a random number between 10 and 20. Write down the experience points for each Pokemon.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and their operations."
- "In this lesson, we will be using arithmetic skills to have fun with Pokemon-related activities."
- "We can use addition to find the total sum of numbers, like when we added up the Pokedex numbers of our Pokemon team."
- "Subtraction can help us determine the difference between numbers, like when we subtracted the defense points from the attack points in our Pokemon battle."
- "Multiplication is a way to quickly add numbers together multiple times, like when we multiplied the level of our Pokemon by a random number to calculate their experience points."
- "Remember to always double-check your calculations to make sure they are accurate."
