Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and identify numbers on a number line through engaging activities.

Materials and Prep

  • A large open space on the floor
  • Masking tape or chalk to create a makeshift number line

No prior knowledge or materials are required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Number Line Hopscotch
  • Create a number line on the floor using masking tape or chalk. Label numbers from 1 to 10. Have the student stand at the starting point (number 1) and ask them to hop or jump to the correct number based on your verbal cues or math questions. For example, you can say, "Jump to the number that comes after 3" or "Hop to the number that is one less than 7."

  • Activity 2: Number Line Relay Race
  • Divide the number line into sections and assign each section to a different number. Create two teams with the student and another family member or friend. Each team takes turns calling out a number or math question, and the student from each team has to run and jump to the correct number as fast as possible. The team that finishes first wins!

  • Activity 3: Number Line Treasure Hunt
  • Hide small objects or toys around the number line. Give the student clues about the location of each object using numbers. For example, you can say, "The toy is hidden between the numbers 4 and 6." The student then has to jump or hop to the correct spot on the number line to find the hidden treasure.

Talking Points

  • Numbers help us count and keep track of things.
  • A number line is like a road with numbers. We can jump or hop on it to find the right numbers.
  • When we jump to the right number, we are playing a fun game and learning at the same time.
  • We can use the number line to practice counting forward and backward.
  • By jumping to different numbers, we can learn about addition and subtraction too!
