Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify common grocery items, understand their names, and use basic English vocabulary related to grocery shopping.
Materials and Prep
- Toy grocery items (such as plastic fruits, vegetables, and packaged goods)
- Toy shopping cart or basket
- Blank paper and crayons/markers
- Optional: Real grocery items (fruits, vegetables, or packaged goods)
Activities
-
Play "Grocery Store": Set up a pretend grocery store using the toy grocery items. Take turns being the shopper and the cashier. Practice saying the names of the items as they are placed in the cart or basket.
-
Draw and Label: Give the student a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw some of their favorite grocery items. Encourage them to label each item with its name.
-
Sorting Game: Mix up the toy grocery items and ask the student to sort them into categories such as fruits, vegetables, and packaged goods. Use simple language to describe each category and the items within them.
-
Real-Life Shopping: If possible, take the student on a real grocery shopping trip. Point out different items and ask them to identify them by name. Encourage them to use their vocabulary during the trip.

- "Let's play a game! I will show you a toy grocery item, and you tell me what it is called. For example, this is an apple. Can you say 'apple'?"
- "Now, let's draw some of our favorite grocery items. What is your favorite fruit or vegetable?"
- "We can sort the grocery items into different groups. Can you help me put all the fruits together? What about the vegetables?"

- "Remember, when we go grocery shopping, we need to use our words to tell the cashier what we want to buy. Can you say 'I want apples, please'?"
