Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

  • Create and use a day-of-the-week calendar
  • Identify the days of the week in English
  • Perform simple addition and subtraction calculations using the calendar

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or marker

No prior knowledge or preparation required.

Activities

  1. Create a Day-of-the-Week Calendar:
  2. Guide the student to draw a table with seven columns, one for each day of the week, and enough rows for the current month. Write the days of the week in English at the top of each column.

  3. Change the Day Daily:
  4. Encourage the student to update the calendar each day, crossing out the previous day and writing the current day in the corresponding column.

  5. Calculate Days Until an Event:
  6. Ask the student to think of an upcoming event and calculate how many days are left until that event. Guide them in counting the days on the calendar and performing simple subtraction to find the answer.

  7. Calculate Days Since a Specific Day:
  8. Choose a specific day in the past and ask the student to calculate how many days have passed since then. Help them count the days on the calendar and perform simple addition to find the answer.

Talking Points

  • Today, we are going to learn about days of the week and make our own day-of-the-week calendar.

  • A calendar helps us keep track of the days. It has different sections for each day of the week.

  • We write the days of the week in English. Can you say the days of the week with me?

  • Now, let's draw our own calendar. We will make a table with seven columns for the days of the week, and enough rows for the current month.

  • Every day, we will update our calendar. We will cross out the previous day and write the current day in the right column.

  • Now, let's think of an event that will happen in the future. Can you tell me what it is? Let's count the days on the calendar to see how many days are left until that event.

  • Great! Now, let's choose a specific day in the past. Can you think of a day? We will count the days on the calendar to see how many days have passed since then.

  • Remember, to find out how many days are left until an event, we can subtract the current day from the day of the event.

  • To find out how many days have passed since a specific day, we can add the number of days from that day until today.

  • Well done! You have learned how to create and use a day-of-the-week calendar, identify the days of the week in English, and perform simple addition and subtraction calculations using the calendar.
