Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to keep track of the days of the week on a calendar and perform simple addition or subtraction calculations using the calendar.
Materials and Prep
- A calendar with the days of the week
- A marker or pen
Activities
- Activity 1: Introduce the calendar - Show the student the calendar with the days of the week clearly marked. Explain that the days repeat in a cycle and ask the student to repeat the names of the days after you.
- Activity 2: Changing the day - Each day, ask the student to change the day on the calendar. Encourage them to say the name of the new day out loud as they do so.
- Activity 3: Counting days - Ask the student to calculate how many days are left until a certain event. For example, say "There are 3 days left until your birthday. Can you count how many days that is on the calendar?" Guide the student to count the days and find the answer.
- Activity 4: Days passed - Choose a specific day and ask the student to calculate how many days have passed since that day. For example, say "Today is Thursday. How many days have passed since Monday?" Guide the student to count the days and find the answer.
