Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the scientific method and be able to apply it to create and observe oobleck.

Materials and Prep

  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Newspapers or plastic sheet (to protect the work area)
  • Apron or old clothes to protect clothing
  • Pen and paper for recording observations

Activities

  1. Introduction to the Scientific Method

    Explain to the student the steps of the scientific method: observation, question, hypothesis, experiment, data analysis, and conclusion. Use examples to illustrate each step.

  2. Create Oobleck

    Guide the student in measuring and mixing cornstarch and water in a bowl. Encourage them to experiment with different ratios to observe the consistency changes.

  3. Explore Oobleck's Properties

    Have the student observe and describe the properties of oobleck, such as its ability to flow like a liquid and become solid under pressure. Encourage them to ask questions and make predictions about its behavior.

  4. Experiment with Oobleck

    Challenge the student to design and conduct experiments to investigate different factors that may affect oobleck's behavior, such as temperature, amount of water, or adding food coloring. Encourage them to record their observations and analyze the data.

  5. Conclusion and Reflection

    Discuss the findings of the experiments and help the student draw conclusions based on their observations. Encourage them to reflect on what they learned about the scientific method and the properties of oobleck.
