Objective

The objective of this lesson is for the student to learn about English, History, Math, and Science concepts through the theme of designing and building LEGO sports cars based on real cars. By the end of the lesson, the student should have a deeper understanding of various subjects while having fun with LEGO.

Materials and Prep

  • LEGO bricks
  • Reference books or online resources about real sports cars
  • Pen and paper

No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson, as it is designed to introduce and explore various subjects in an engaging way.

Activities

  • Research and Design: Encourage the student to choose a real sports car they want to recreate with LEGO bricks. Have them research the car's features, specifications, and design elements. They can sketch their design on paper before starting to build.
  • Building the Chassis: Instruct the student to start building the chassis of their LEGO sports car. They can experiment with different techniques to ensure stability and functionality.
  • Adding Details: Once the chassis is complete, the student can focus on adding details such as the body, wheels, and other features. They should pay attention to proportion and accuracy.
  • Present and Discuss: After completing the LEGO sports car, have the student present their creation and discuss the real car it is based on. Encourage them to talk about the historical context, performance aspects, and any interesting facts related to the car.

Talking Points

  • "English: When designing and building your LEGO sports car, think about the vocabulary you can use to describe its features, such as aerodynamic, sleek, or powerful."
  • "History: Researching the real sports car you are recreating allows you to learn about the history of car manufacturing, famous car designers, and technological advancements in the automotive industry."
  • "Math: While building the chassis, you can explore mathematical concepts like geometry, symmetry, and measurement. Consider the angles, dimensions, and ratios to ensure your LEGO car is well-proportioned."
  • "Science: As you construct your LEGO sports car, think about the scientific principles behind its design. How does aerodynamics affect its performance? How does friction impact the movement of the wheels? Explore these concepts while having fun with LEGO!"
