- A cardboard box or pizza box with a lid
- Aluminum foil
- Plastic wrap
- Black construction paper
- A ruler
- A pencil
- A pair of scissors
- A marker
- An egg
- A small pan or skillet
- A sunny outdoor area
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have all the materials ready and find a sunny spot outside to set up your solar oven.
Activities
- Construct your solar oven by following these steps:
- Take the cardboard box and cut a flap in the lid, leaving one side attached.
- Cover the inner side of the flap with aluminum foil.
- Line the bottom of the box with black construction paper.
- Place the plastic wrap over the opening of the box and secure it with tape.
- Set up your solar oven outside in a sunny area.
- Place the small pan or skillet inside the solar oven.
- Crack an egg into the pan or skillet.
- Carefully close the lid of the solar oven.
- Leave the solar oven outside for about 20-30 minutes and let the sun do its work.
- Check on your egg to see if it has cooked. If not, leave it for a little longer.
- Once the egg is cooked, carefully remove it from the solar oven.
- Enjoy your solar-cooked egg!
Talking Points
- The sun is a powerful source of energy that can be used to cook food.
- When sunlight hits the aluminum foil, it gets absorbed and converted into heat.
- The black construction paper helps to absorb more heat and transfer it to the egg.
- Plastic wrap acts as a greenhouse, trapping the heat inside the solar oven.
- Leaving the solar oven in the sun for a longer time allows the egg to cook thoroughly.
- It's important to be patient and not open the solar oven frequently, as it lets the heat escape.
- Solar ovens are a sustainable and eco-friendly way to cook food using renewable energy.
