Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify components of digital systems and understand how they work.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet
  • An internet connection
  • Access to a web browser

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Explore a computer or tablet: Start by examining the device you are using. Look at its different parts, such as the screen, keyboard, mouse or touchpad, and speakers. Discuss what each component does and how they contribute to the overall functioning of the device.

  2. Identify digital components: Go online and search for images of different digital devices, such as smartphones, cameras, or game consoles. Identify and name the components of these devices, just like you did with your own device.

  3. Build a digital system: Using a simple online simulator or a drawing tool, create a digital system by connecting different components together. For example, you can connect a screen, a keyboard, and a mouse to simulate a computer. Discuss how these components work together to perform tasks.

  4. Play a digital component matching game: Create flashcards with pictures of various digital components. Shuffle the cards and place them face down. Turn over two cards at a time and try to match the components. For each match, explain what the component does and how it is used in a digital system.

Talking Points

  • "Digital systems are all around us, from our computers and smartphones to cameras and game consoles."

  • "Components are the different parts that make up a digital system. Each component has a specific job."

  • "The screen is where we see information and pictures. It's like a TV for the computer."

  • "The keyboard helps us type words and numbers. It's like a set of buttons for the computer."

  • "The mouse or touchpad lets us move a pointer on the screen. It's like a remote control for the computer."

  • "Speakers allow us to hear sounds and music. They make the computer talk to us."

  • "In a digital system, components work together to perform tasks. Just like a team, they each have a role to play."

  • "Can you think of any other digital devices and their components?"
