Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and analyze the main ideas and supporting details in a text.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper or notebook
- Access to a variety of reading materials (books, articles, etc.)
No specific prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Main Idea and Supporting Details
Read a short passage together, and then ask the student to identify the main idea and supporting details. Discuss why the main idea is important and how the supporting details contribute to it.
-
Activity 2: Summarizing a Text
Choose a longer text and ask the student to read it independently. Afterward, have them write a brief summary of the main idea and key supporting details. Encourage them to use their own words and focus on the most important information.
-
Activity 3: Graphic Organizer
Provide the student with a blank graphic organizer (such as a T-chart or a web) and ask them to fill it in with the main idea in the center and supporting details branching out. This visual representation can help them better understand the relationship between the main idea and its supporting details.

- "Supporting details are specific pieces of information that back up or explain the main idea. They provide evidence or examples to support the main idea."

- "Supporting details can include facts, examples, statistics, anecdotes, or quotes from experts."
- "Summarizing a text means condensing the main idea and key details into a shorter version. It helps us focus on the most important information and understand the text more easily."
- "Graphic organizers are visual tools that can help us organize information and see the connections between different ideas. They are especially useful when analyzing the main idea and supporting details of a text."
