By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to identify and use basic Spanish vocabulary related to autumn, and engage in simple conversations about autumn activities in Spanish.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Optional: Autumn-themed pictures or flashcards

Activities

  1. Introduction: Begin by discussing the concept of autumn and its characteristics in English. Then, introduce the Spanish word for autumn, which is "otoño". Write it on the board and have the student repeat it several times.
  2. Vocabulary Building: Provide a list of autumn-related words in English, such as "leaves", "pumpkin", "sweater", "harvest", etc. Have the student try to guess the Spanish equivalent of each word. Write the Spanish words on the board and practice pronunciation.
  3. Matching Game: Create a simple matching game using the Spanish words for autumn vocabulary and their corresponding English translations. Cut out small cards with the words and mix them up. Have the student match the Spanish word to its English translation.
  4. Conversation Practice: Engage in a conversation with the student using the learned vocabulary. Ask questions like "¿Qué te gusta hacer en otoño?" (What do you like to do in autumn?) and have the student respond using the vocabulary learned. Encourage them to ask you questions as well.
  5. Writing Activity: Have the student write a short paragraph in Spanish describing their favorite autumn activity. Provide sentence starters if needed, such as "En otoño, me gusta..." (In autumn, I like...). Review their writing and provide feedback.
