Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to introduce yourself and have basic conversations in Spanish.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Printed vocabulary list (provided below)
  • Access to a Spanish-English dictionary (online or physical)

No prior knowledge of Spanish is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Start by learning basic greetings and introductions in Spanish. Practice saying "Hola" (hello), "¿Cómo estás?" (how are you?), and "Me llamo [your name]" (my name is [your name]). Repeat these phrases multiple times until you feel comfortable.

  2. Next, create flashcards with common objects or actions written in English on one side and their Spanish translations on the other side. Use these flashcards to practice vocabulary. Start with simple words like "house" (casa), "dog" (perro), "eat" (comer), etc. Test yourself by looking at the English word and trying to recall the Spanish translation, and vice versa.

  3. Now, let's practice having a basic conversation in Spanish. Pretend you are meeting a new friend who speaks Spanish. Start by greeting them and introducing yourself. Then, ask them "¿Cómo te llamas?" (what's your name?). Practice responding to their name and asking them "¿Cómo estás?" (how are you?). Have a short conversation using these phrases.

  4. Finally, write a short paragraph in Spanish about yourself. Include your name, age, where you live, and some of your hobbies or interests. Use the vocabulary you have learned so far. Don't worry too much about grammar at this stage, just focus on expressing yourself in Spanish.
