Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a clear workspace and adult supervision if necessary.

Activities

  • Measure and mark the dimensions for the box on the wooden boards.
  • Using the saw, carefully cut the wooden boards according to the measurements.
  • Sand the edges and surfaces of the cut boards to smooth out any roughness.
  • Apply wood glue to the edges of the boards and join them together to form the box shape.
  • Use clamps to hold the boards in place while the glue dries.
  • Once the glue is dry, remove the clamps and sand any excess glue.
  • If desired, paint or varnish the box to add color or protection.
  • Allow the paint or varnish to dry completely.
  • Your wooden box is now ready to be used or decorated!

Talking Points

  • Woodworking is a fun and creative activity that allows us to make useful objects out of wood.
  • When measuring and marking the dimensions, it's important to be precise to ensure the pieces fit together properly.
  • Always exercise caution and have adult supervision when using tools like saws to ensure safety.
  • Sanding the edges and surfaces of the boards helps to remove any roughness and splinters, making the box smooth to touch.
  • Wood glue is a strong adhesive that helps to hold the wooden pieces together securely.
  • Clamps are used to hold the boards tightly in place while the glue dries, ensuring a strong bond.
  • Removing excess glue and sanding it down will make the box look neater and more professional.
  • Paint or varnish can be added to the box to give it a personalized touch or protect the wood from damage.
  • Allowing the paint or varnish to dry completely is important to prevent smudging or sticking.
