Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to play Solitaire independently and understand the basic rules and strategies of the game.

Materials and Prep

  • A deck of playing cards
  • A flat surface to play on
  • Prior knowledge of numbers and basic counting

Activities

  1. Learn the basic rules of Solitaire:

    • Shuffle the deck and deal out seven piles of cards, with the first pile containing one card, the second pile containing two cards, and so on.
    • Turn the top card of each pile face up.
    • Build the tableau by moving cards from one pile to another, following the descending order (King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace) and alternating colors (red and black).
    • Try to uncover and move cards to the foundation piles (Ace to King of the same suit) to win the game.
  2. Practice playing Solitaire:

    • Set up the game according to the rules you just learned.
    • Play several rounds of Solitaire, trying different strategies and moves.
    • Take note of any difficulties or challenges you encounter while playing.
  3. Explore variations of Solitaire:

    • Research and learn about different versions of Solitaire, such as Spider Solitaire or FreeCell.
    • Try playing one of the variations and compare it to traditional Solitaire.
    • Notice any differences in rules or gameplay.
