Activities
Introduction to Sewing
Start by discussing the history and importance of sewing. Show examples of different types of sewn items and discuss their purposes. Explain how sewing can be both functional and creative.
Basic Sewing Techniques
Teach the student how to thread a needle, tie a knot at the end of the thread, and perform a basic running stitch. Demonstrate how to sew two pieces of fabric together using a running stitch.
Create a Simple Project
Guide the student in creating a small fabric pouch. Provide them with a template or allow them to create their own design. Assist them in cutting the fabric, pinning the pieces together, and sewing the seams. Encourage creativity by allowing them to decorate the pouch with additional stitches or fabric scraps.
Finishing Touches
Show the student how to finish the edges of their project by folding and sewing a hem. Optional: Demonstrate how to use an iron to press the fabric for a neater finish.
