Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basics of architecture and its importance in history, develop creative thinking skills through art activities, and apply mathematical concepts in designing structures.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencils
  • Ruler
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Internet access (optional)

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Architectural Sketching
In this activity, the student will practice their drawing skills by sketching different architectural elements such as columns, arches, and windows. They can use online resources or books for reference if needed.
  • Activity 2: Design Your Dream House
The student will imagine and design their dream house using paper and pencils. They should consider the layout, room sizes, and architectural features they would like to include. Encourage them to be creative and think about how they would use each space.
  • Activity 3: Math in Architecture
Introduce the concept of scale drawing and how architects use measurements to create accurate representations of buildings. Provide the student with a simple floor plan and have them practice scaling it down or up using a ruler. They can also calculate the area of different rooms.
  • Activity 4: Famous Architect Research
Ask the student to choose a famous architect from history and research their life and notable works. They can create a short presentation or write a report to share their findings.

    • "Windows provide light, ventilation, and views in a building."
  • Mathematics in Architecture
    • "Scale drawing is a way to represent objects or spaces at a smaller or larger size than the actual object."
    • "Architects use measurements and ratios to create accurate scaled drawings of buildings."
    • "Calculating the area of rooms helps architects determine the amount of materials needed for construction."
  • Famous Architect
    • "Choose a famous architect like Frank Lloyd Wright, Zaha Hadid, or I.M. Pei to research."
    • "Find out about their background, notable works, and their impact on the field of architecture."
