Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic math skills while playing Minecraft.
Materials and Prep
- A computer or tablet with Minecraft installed
- Paper and pencil for taking notes
No prior knowledge of Minecraft is required. We will learn as we go!
Activities
- Activity 1: Counting Blocks
- Activity 2: Building with Patterns
- Activity 3: Measuring Distances
Explore your Minecraft world and count how many blocks you can find. Write down the number of blocks you counted.
Choose a pattern you like and build it using Minecraft blocks. For example, you can create a checkerboard pattern or a staircase pattern. Count how many blocks you used for the pattern.
Find two different locations in your Minecraft world and measure the distance between them. Use the blocks as a unit of measurement. Write down the distance you measured.
Talking Points
- Counting Blocks:
- "In Minecraft, we can count the blocks to keep track of how many we have."
- "Let's explore the world and count how many blocks we can find."
- "Write down the number of blocks you counted to keep track of your progress."
- Building with Patterns:
- "Patterns are a fun way to create designs in Minecraft."
- "Choose a pattern you like and build it using Minecraft blocks."
- "Count how many blocks you used to create the pattern."
- Measuring Distances:
- "We can use blocks as a unit of measurement to measure distances in Minecraft."
- "Find two different locations and measure the distance between them using blocks."
- "Write down the distance you measured to compare it with other distances later."
