Before starting the lesson, make sure you have access to a computer or tablet with internet access. If you have a library card, keep it handy. Also, have some paper and a pencil ready for note-taking.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Cooking Genres
  2. Start by discussing different cooking genres, such as baking, grilling, or international cuisines. Ask the student which genre they are most interested in and why. Encourage them to think about the types of recipes they would like to learn.

  3. Using Online Recipe Websites
  4. Guide the student to use a computer or tablet to search for online recipe websites. Show them how to use keywords related to their chosen cooking genre to find relevant recipes. Have them bookmark a few interesting recipes to try later.

  5. Exploring Cookbooks in the Library
  6. If the student has a library card, explain the importance of using cookbooks as a resource. Teach them how to search for cookbooks in the library's online catalog. If access to physical books is not possible, show them how to access digital cookbooks through the library's website.

  7. Researching Cooking Techniques
  8. Encourage the student to research specific cooking techniques related to their chosen genre. They can use online resources or books from the library. Have them take notes on different techniques they find interesting and would like to learn.

  9. Creating a Recipe Collection
  10. Ask the student to compile their favorite online recipes, cookbook titles, and cooking techniques in a recipe collection. They can use a notebook or create a digital document. Remind them to include the source and any additional notes or modifications they would like to make to the recipes.
