Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to collect and analyze data related to shoes, and understand basic statistics concepts.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Shoes (at least 5 different pairs)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Activity 1: Shoe Survey
- Activity 2: Shoe Graph
- Activity 3: Shoe Statistics
Ask your family members or friends to participate in a shoe survey. Collect data on the number of pairs of shoes they own. Record the data in a table.
Using the data from the shoe survey, create a bar graph to represent the number of pairs of shoes owned by each person. Make sure to label the axes and give your graph a title.
Calculate the mean (average) number of pairs of shoes owned by the participants. Also, find the range (difference between the highest and lowest values) and the mode (the value that appears most frequently) of the data.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Statistics is a branch of mathematics that deals with collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data."
- "Data is information that we collect. In this lesson, we collected data about the number of pairs of shoes owned by different people."
- "A survey is a way to collect data by asking questions or observing people. We conducted a shoe survey to collect data about shoes."
- "A bar graph is a way to represent data using bars. Each bar represents a category, in our case, the number of pairs of shoes owned. The height of the bar shows the quantity or frequency of that category."
- "The mean is a measure of central tendency. It is found by adding up all the values and dividing by the total number of values. In our case, it gives us the average number of pairs of shoes owned."
- "The range is a measure of spread. It tells us the difference between the highest and lowest values in a data set. It helps us understand how much the values vary."
- "The mode is the value that appears most frequently in a data set. In our case, it tells us the most common number of pairs of shoes owned."
