Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to identify and understand the basic concepts of bio molecules.
Materials and Prep
- Water
- Sugar
- Food coloring
- Plastic cups
- Plastic spoons
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Introduction to Bio Molecules
Start by explaining to the student that bio molecules are the building blocks of life. Give some examples of bio molecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Show pictures or real-life examples if available.
-
Water Molecule Exploration
Fill a plastic cup with water and ask the student to observe it. Explain that water is made up of tiny molecules called H2O. Show how two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom combine to form a water molecule. Use diagrams or physical models if available.
-
Sugar Dissolving Experiment
Give the student a plastic cup filled with water. Add a spoonful of sugar and stir until it dissolves. Explain that sugar is a type of carbohydrate and it dissolves in water. Discuss how the water molecules surround the sugar molecules and break them apart.
-
Food Coloring and Diffusion
Fill a plastic cup with water and add a few drops of food coloring. Ask the student to observe what happens. Explain that the food coloring molecules are diffusing or spreading out in the water. Discuss how the water molecules help the food coloring molecules move around.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Bio molecules are like tiny building blocks that make up living things."
- "Water is made up of small molecules called H2O, which means it has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom."
- "Sugar is a type of carbohydrate that dissolves in water. It breaks apart into tiny pieces when we mix it with water."
- "Food coloring is made up of molecules that can spread out or move around in water. This is called diffusion."
