Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and tell time, identify different parts of a clock, and solve basic time-related problems.

Materials and Prep

  • A clock with hands
  • Paper and pencil
  • A whiteboard or blackboard

Prior knowledge: The student should be familiar with counting numbers up to 60.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Clock Craft - Have the student create their own clock using paper and markers. They can draw the numbers and decorate it as they like.
  • Activity 2: Time Matching - Write down different times on separate pieces of paper and spread them out on a table. The student should match the written time with the corresponding clock face.
  • Activity 3: Time Puzzles - Create simple time-related puzzles where the student needs to figure out the missing hour or minute hand on a clock.
  • Activity 4: Time Story - Ask the student to create a short story involving different times. They can draw illustrations and write down the time mentioned in the story.

Talking Points

  • Quotation: "Time helps us know when things happen. It tells us when to wake up, eat lunch, or go to bed."
  • Quotation: "A clock has two hands - a short hand and a long hand. The short hand tells us the hour, and the long hand tells us the minutes."
  • Quotation: "When the short hand points to the number 12, it means it's the beginning of an hour. When it points to the number 6, it means it's the middle of an hour."
  • Quotation: "The long hand goes around the clock faster. It points to the minutes. When it points to the number 12, it means it's the beginning of a new hour."
  • Quotation: "To read the time, look at where the short hand points first. Then, see which number the long hand is closest to. That's the minute."
  • Quotation: "If the long hand is pointing exactly at the number 12, it means it's the start of a new hour. If it's pointing halfway between two numbers, it means it's halfway through that hour."
  • Quotation: "We can also use time words like 'o'clock', 'half-past', and 'quarter-past' to describe specific times."
