Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to tell time on a clock.

Materials and Prep

  • A clock with both hour and minute hands
  • A whiteboard or paper and markers
  • A worksheet with clock faces

Activities

1. Start by introducing the concept of time and explaining the purpose of a clock.

2. Show the student a clock and explain the different parts, including the hour hand and the minute hand.

3. Practice identifying the hour and minute hands by pointing them out on the clock and asking the student to do the same.

4. Draw a clock on the whiteboard or paper and ask the student to draw the hour and minute hands in different positions.

5. Use the worksheet with clock faces to practice telling time. Ask the student to write the time shown on each clock.

6. Play a game where you call out a time and the student has to show it on the clock using the hour and minute hands.

7. Review the concept of time and clocks, and ask the student to explain what they have learned.

Talking Points

  • Time helps us know when to do different things. It tells us if it's morning, afternoon, or evening.
  • A clock is a special tool that helps us measure time. It has two hands - the short hand is called the hour hand, and the long hand is called the minute hand.
  • The hour hand points to the hour, and the minute hand points to the minutes.
  • When the minute hand is pointing to 12, it means it's the beginning of the hour. When it's pointing to 6, it means it's halfway through the hour.
  • When the hour hand is pointing exactly at a number, it means it's that hour. When it's between two numbers, we look at the nearest hour.
  • Let's practice drawing the hour and minute hands on a clock. Can you draw the hour hand pointing to 3 and the minute hand pointing to 9?
  • Now, let's look at some clock faces and write down the time shown. Remember to look at both the hour and minute hands.
  • Great job! Now, let's play a game. I will say a time, and you show it on the clock using the hour and minute hands.
