Materials and Prep
- A collection of rocks and minerals (at least 5 different types)
- A magnifying glass
- A white sheet of paper
- A pencil or marker
- A notebook or journal
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have gathered the rocks and minerals and have them ready for exploration.
Activities
- Introduction: Begin by showing the collection of rocks and minerals to the student. Talk about how rocks and minerals are different and what makes them special.
- Observation: Give the student the magnifying glass and the white sheet of paper. Instruct them to pick one rock or mineral and place it on the paper. Ask them to carefully observe the rock or mineral using the magnifying glass. Encourage them to draw what they see in their notebook or journal.
- Classification: Have the student sort the rocks and minerals into two groups - rocks and minerals. Discuss the differences between the two and explain that rocks are made up of minerals.
- Properties: Select one rock and one mineral from the collection. Discuss the properties of each, such as color, texture, and hardness. Encourage the student to describe the properties using their own words.
- Identification: Show the student a picture of a rock or mineral and ask them to identify it from the collection. Discuss the similarities and differences between the picture and the actual rock or mineral.
