Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify how materials can be changed or combined to create new substances.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: water, baking soda, vinegar, food coloring, mixing containers, spoon, safety goggles

Prep: Ensure a safe workspace, have all materials ready before starting the activities.

Activities

1. Create a baking soda and vinegar volcano: Mix baking soda, vinegar, and a drop of food coloring in a container to observe a fizzy eruption.

2. Make slime: Combine water, glue, and a little borax to create a stretchy and gooey substance.

3. Rainbow in a jar: Layer different liquids with varying densities to create a colorful liquid stack.

Talking Points

  • When two or more materials are combined, they can create a new substance with different properties. For example, mixing baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide gas, causing the fizzing reaction.
  • Some materials can change their state when combined, like the liquid glue turning into a stretchy solid-like slime when mixed with borax.
  • By layering liquids with different densities in the rainbow in a jar activity, we can observe how materials can stay separate due to their differing properties.
