Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and effectively use Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 vocabulary to extend and elaborate your ideas.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Colorful markers or crayons
  • Dictionary (online or physical)
  • Enthusiasm to learn!

No prior knowledge is needed for this lesson, just come ready to have fun and learn new words!

Activities

  • Word Hunt: Go on a scavenger hunt around your house to find objects that represent Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 vocabulary words. Write the words down and draw a picture of each item.
  • Story Time: Create a short story using at least 5 Tier 2 words. Illustrate your story with colorful drawings to bring it to life.
  • Dictionary Dive: Look up a Tier 3 word in the dictionary and write down its definition. Then, try to use that word in a sentence of your own!

Talking Points

  • Tier 1 words are: "words we use every day like 'happy' or 'dog'."
  • Tier 2 words are: "special words that help us explain things better, like 'enormous' or 'determined'."
  • Tier 3 words are: "fancy words that we might not use all the time, like 'photosynthesis' or 'metamorphosis'."
  • It's important to: "know different types of words so we can talk about all sorts of things in a cool way!"
