Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to use the structure of equal groups to solve multiplication problems and use sharing or grouping to solve division problems.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Paper, pencil, colored markers or crayons

Prep: None

Activities

1. Multiplication with Equal Groups: Draw different objects like stars or circles in equal groups and write the multiplication sentence for each group.

2. Division with Sharing: Use your favorite toys or snacks and share them with your imaginary friends. Write down the division sentence for each sharing scenario.

3. Multiplication and Division Story Problems: Create fun stories involving multiplication and division. Solve them using drawings and equations.

Talking Points

  • What is multiplication? Let's think of it as adding equal groups together. For example, if we have 3 groups of 4 stars each, how many stars do we have in total? Remember, multiplication is like fast addition!
  • Now, what is division? It's like sharing or grouping things equally. If we have 12 stars and want to share them into 3 groups, how many stars will be in each group?
  • When we see the symbol 'x' in math, it means we are multiplying. It helps us quickly find the total when we have equal groups. Can you think of a fun way to remember that?
  • When we see the symbol '÷' in math, it means we are dividing. It helps us share or group things equally. Can you imagine sharing your toys with friends using this symbol?
  • Remember, in multiplication, the order of the numbers doesn't matter. But in division, the order does matter. Can you explain why that is?
  • Let's practice drawing equal groups for multiplication and sharing for division. It will make solving problems more fun and easier to understand. How about drawing some groups of your favorite animals?
  • Always remember, math is like a puzzle. We just need to find the right pieces and put them together in the right way. You're doing great! Keep practicing and you'll become a math superstar!
