By the end of this lesson, you will be able to describe, compare, and order durations of events, as well as read half- and quarter-hour time.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: clock or watch, paper, pencil

Prep: Make sure the clock or watch is set to the correct time.

Activities

1. Time Detective: Look around your house and find 5 different activities. Write down how long you think each activity takes in minutes.

2. Time Bingo: Create a bingo card with different times (e.g., 3:30, 4:15). Call out times and mark them on your bingo card.

3. Time Art: Draw a clock and label the hours and minutes. Practice drawing the clock hands for different times.

Talking Points

  • Quotation: "Time is like a story, it has a beginning, middle, and end. We can describe how long things take just like we describe a story's plot."
  • Quotation: "When we compare two times, we see which one comes first and which one comes later. It's like putting events in order."
  • Quotation: "Half-hour means 30 minutes. So, when the big hand is on the 6, it's half past the hour."
  • Quotation: "Quarter-hour means 15 minutes. When the big hand is on the 3, it's a quarter past the hour."
