Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe how ideas are represented in literature and use similar representations when creating your own texts.

Materials and Prep

Materials: Paper, pencils, colored markers

Prep: None

Activities

  • Story Elements Match-Up: Write down different story elements (characters, setting, plot) on separate pieces of paper. Mix them up and have the student match them correctly.

  • Character Drawing: Ask the student to choose a character from a book they like and draw it. Encourage them to think about how the character's appearance represents their personality.

  • Creating a Story: Have the student create their own short story. Remind them to include details that represent different ideas or themes.

Talking Points

  • Characters in a story: "Characters are like the people in a story. They can be brave, funny, or kind. What kind of character do you like the most?"

  • Setting of a story: "The setting is where the story happens. It can be in a big city, a magical forest, or even in space! What setting would you choose for your story?"

  • Plot of a story: "The plot is what happens in a story. It's like a journey the characters go on. What exciting things would you want to happen in your story?"

  • Using details in writing: "Details are like colors in a painting. They make the story more interesting. What details can you add to your story to make it come alive?"
