Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to confidently use mental and written strategies for adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- 2- and 3-digit number cards (can be handmade)
- Basic understanding of place value
Activities
- Number Line Hop: Create a number line on the floor using tape. Call out addition or subtraction problems and have the student hop to the correct answer on the number line.
- Flashcard Challenge: Use the number cards to create flashcards with addition and subtraction problems. Time the student as they solve the flashcards to make it more exciting.
- Math Story Problems: Create fun story problems involving 2- and 3-digit numbers for the student to solve. Encourage them to draw pictures or use objects to help visualize the problems.
Talking Points
- Quotation: "When we add two numbers together, we are putting them together to find the total. It's like combining ingredients to make a delicious cake!"
- Quotation: "Subtraction is like taking away. When we subtract, we are finding out how much is left. It's like eating pieces of a pizza until there's none left!"
- Quotation: "Remember, when adding or subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers, we need to pay attention to the place value of each digit. Each place has a different value."
- Quotation: "If you get stuck on a problem, it's okay to take a deep breath and try again. Mistakes help us learn and grow stronger in math!"
