Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create models and sketches of three-dimensional objects like prisms and pyramids.
Materials and Prep
Materials needed: paper, pencil, ruler, scissors
Prep: Make sure you have a clear workspace to work on your activities.
Activities
Activity 1: Create a Prism Model
Use your ruler and pencil to draw a rectangle on a piece of paper. Cut it out, then fold it to form a prism. Label the edges and faces.
Activity 2: Sketch a Pyramid Net
Draw a triangle on a piece of paper. Cut it out and fold it to form a pyramid. Decorate the faces with different colors.
Activity 3: Build a 3D Shape
Use your paper to create a 3D shape of your choice. It could be a house, a car, or anything you like!
Talking Points
- "A prism has two parallel faces that are the same shape and size. Can you find the faces on your prism model?"
- "A pyramid has a polygonal base and triangular faces that meet at a single point called the apex. Where is the apex on your pyramid?"
- "When we unfold a 3D object into a 2D shape, we get what is called a net. How does your pyramid net look like?"
- "Remember, the edges of a prism are straight lines. Can you count the edges on your prism model?"
- "Let's use our imagination to create a unique 3D shape. What kind of shape would you like to build next?"
