Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create models and sketches of three-dimensional objects, specifically prisms and pyramids, using nets.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson, just come ready to have fun with math!

Activities

  • Create Nets: Draw and cut out nets for different prisms and pyramids. Fold along the lines to create the 3D shapes.
  • Sketch Models: Use your imagination to sketch 3D models of prisms and pyramids on paper. Add colors to make them vibrant!
  • Identify Shapes: Look around your house and identify objects that resemble prisms and pyramids. Sketch them in your notebook.

Talking Points

  • Prisms are 3D shapes with flat sides and identical cross-sections. Can you find any objects at home that look like prisms? Let's sketch them!
  • Pyramids have a polygonal base and triangular faces that meet at a vertex. Imagine a pyramid-shaped ice cream cone! How many sides does it have?
  • A net is a 2D pattern that can be folded to form a 3D shape. Let's draw nets for a cube and a square pyramid. How many squares do we need for a cube?
