Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will learn about colors and how they mix together to create new colors.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: 3 cups, water, red, yellow, and blue food coloring, and a paintbrush.

Make sure to cover the workspace with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to avoid mess.

Activities

1. Color Mixing Magic: Fill each cup with water and add a few drops of food coloring to create red, yellow, and blue water. Let your child mix the colors together and observe the new colors that are formed.

2. Colorful Art: Using the paintbrush, have your child create a masterpiece by painting with the mixed colors on a piece of paper. Encourage them to experiment with different color combinations.

3. Color Hunt: Go on a color hunt around the house or backyard. Have your child find objects that match the colors they created during the color mixing activity.

Talking Points

  • "When we mix red and yellow, we get orange! Isn't that cool?"
  • "Look at how blue and yellow mix to make green, just like the grass outside."
  • "What happens when we mix all the colors together? Let's find out!"
  • "Colors are so much fun to play with and mix. What new color do you think we will create next?"
