Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore the world of music through the theme of Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Materials and Prep

  • Mr. Popper's Penguins book
  • Device or computer to access online resources
  • Various musical instruments (if available)

Activities

  1. Read aloud a chapter from Mr. Popper's Penguins. Encourage the student to listen carefully to the story and imagine the penguins' adventures.

  2. Discuss the different emotions and moods that the penguins experience throughout the story. Ask the student to share their thoughts and feelings about the events in the book.

  3. Introduce different musical instruments and their sounds. Play short audio clips or videos of various instruments and ask the student to identify the sounds they hear.

  4. Encourage the student to create their own musical composition inspired by Mr. Popper's Penguins. They can use the instruments available or make their own instruments using household items.

  5. Have a mini concert! Let the student perform their composition for you and any other family members. Applaud their efforts and discuss the emotions or scenes they were trying to convey through their music.
