Using the internet, explore different genres of music such as classical, jazz, rock, and pop. Discuss the characteristics of each genre and how they make you feel.
Using the coloring materials, draw and color penguins. Cut them out and attach them to popsicle sticks to create your own penguin band. Assign different instruments to each penguin.
Using your penguin band, take turns performing a concert. Each penguin can make their own unique sound or movement to represent their instrument.
Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "In the story, Mr. Popper had penguins as pets. What do you think it would be like to have penguins at home?"
- "Music can make us feel different emotions. How does classical music make you feel? How about rock music?"
- "What instrument would you like your penguin to play in the band? Why did you choose that instrument?"
- "Can you show me how your penguin would play their instrument? Let's have a mini-concert!"
