Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to investigate different properties of materials and understand why materials are different.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: various objects made of different materials (wood, metal, plastic, etc.), water, magnifying glass, paper, crayons.

Prep: Gather the materials and set up a safe workspace for exploration.

Activities

1. Material Hunt: Go around your house and find objects made of different materials. Make a list of what you find.

2. Sink or Float: Fill a tub with water and test different objects to see if they sink or float. Record your observations.

3. Texture Rubbings: Place different materials (like wood, metal, or plastic) under a piece of paper and rub with crayons to see the textures.

Talking Points

  • Why are materials different?
    • "Materials are different because they are made up of different stuff. Just like how you are different from your friends!"
  • What are some properties we can observe in materials?
    • "We can look at how heavy something is, what color it is, and even how it feels when we touch it."
  • Why do some things float and others sink?
    • "Things float if they are lighter than water, and they sink if they are heavier. It's like magic!"
