Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a mixed media artwork using various materials and techniques.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed:

  • Canvas or heavy paper
  • Acrylic paints
  • Watercolor paints
  • Brushes
  • Markers
  • Newspaper or old magazines for collage
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Water cup and paper towels

Prep: Set up a workspace with a protected surface for painting and cutting.

Activities

  • Create a background: Start by painting the canvas or paper with acrylic paints. Experiment with different colors and textures.

  • Add collage elements: Cut out interesting images or patterns from newspapers or magazines. Glue them onto the painted surface to add depth and interest.

  • Layer with watercolors: Use watercolor paints to add more details and colors to your artwork. Mix and blend colors to create unique effects.

  • Final touches: Use markers to outline shapes, add details, or write words on your mixed media piece. Step back and assess if any more elements are needed.
