Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic skills to solve math problems related to Minecraft.

Materials and Prep

  • Minecraft game (if available)
  • Pencil and paper

No prior knowledge of Minecraft is required.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Minecraft Math Problems

    1. Start the Minecraft game (if available) or imagine yourself in the Minecraft world.

    2. Choose a location in the game and count the number of blocks in a row.

    3. Write down the number of blocks you counted.

    4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for two more rows.

    5. Add up the total number of blocks in the three rows.

    6. Write down the sum.

    7. Repeat steps 2-6 for three more locations in the game.

    8. Solve the following problems using the data you collected:

    • a. What is the total number of blocks in all the rows you counted?
    • b. What is the average number of blocks in a row?
    • c. How many more blocks are there in the second location compared to the first location?
    • d. How many blocks are there in the third location if the first location has 10 blocks and the second location has 15 blocks?
  2. Activity 2: Minecraft Word Problems

    1. Imagine you are building a structure in Minecraft.

    2. Write down a word problem related to the structure. For example:

"You have 24 blocks to build a wall. Each row of the wall requires 4 blocks. How many complete rows can you build?"

    3. Solve the word problem using addition or multiplication.

    4. Create two more word problems and solve them.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Arithmetic is a branch of mathematics that deals with numbers and operations."
  • "In Minecraft, we can use arithmetic to solve math problems related to the game."
  • "Counting is an important skill in arithmetic. Counting blocks in Minecraft helps us practice our counting skills."
  • "Addition is a way of combining numbers to find the total. We can use addition to find the total number of blocks in multiple rows in Minecraft."
  • "Subtraction is a way of finding the difference between two numbers. We can use subtraction to find how many more blocks are there in one location compared to another."
  • "Multiplication is a way of repeated addition. We can use multiplication to solve word problems in Minecraft, like figuring out how many complete rows we can build with a certain number of blocks."
